We are still HYPE about all the Black excellence displayed on the big screen and billion-dollar smash that is Black Panther, and feel that we should use this as a Segway to jolt everyone’s attention to higher learning! This movie detailed Black Excellence and Intelligence in such a way that we’ve needed to see for a very long time. We’ve always proud to be Black, but watching ourselves as heroes, warriors, and intellectuals make one want to get their learning on! Yes, there are a plethora of options out there, but we want to talk about why you should choose a school geared towards you.
What is an HBCU?
Any college that was founded prior to 1964 whose primary mission is the education of Black Americans is considered an HBCU. Their belief is that everyone should have access to a quality education.
Why should you pick one?
While there are many viable options available for tertiary education, there are many reasons why one should pick an HBCU. Read on as we have outlined a few below.
Excellent Education– You will be guaranteed an excellent education. HBCUs have generated 25 percent of all Bachelors degrees in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics earned by African Americans.
Classes tailored to People of Color– Classes at HBCUs are often hard to come by at other schools. Wouldn’t it be great to learn about your history as well as the subject you’re learning? Well, that’s what will happen at an HBCU. It’s a total learning experience.
Do it for the Culture– Attending an HBCU is more than going to class it’s an entire cultural experience. You may be sitting in one class but somehow, someway, you will learn about how an African American lent his/her knowledge or expertise to the subject that you’re learning about.
Supportive of the Needs of their Students– HBCUs are in tune with the needs of their students. Many of these students have similar backgrounds and there is a community feel amongst the faculty and staff.
Diversity– While these schools are focused on the education of African-Americans, all are welcome. Students come from all over the world to experience attending one of these schools.
Empowerment & Pride– Just ask anyone who’s been there. Attending an HBCU gives you a sense of empowerment & definitely pride. One may just end up walking with their head held a little higher and more of a pep in their step.
Scholarships & Grants– The cost of attending college is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind. There are many scholarships and grants available for African-American students in general and many specifically geared to students of HBCUs.
Location– They’re everywhere! HBCUs are located all across the U.S. Therefore, if you don’t want to travel far from home, you don’t have to.
You’ll be following in good footsteps– There are many well know African -Americans that have attended HBCUs. Oprah Winfrey, Tom Joyner, Common and our own Yandy Smith-Harris are amongst the many powerhouses that have attended an HBCU.
You’ll have a chance to continue the legacy– HBCUs are schools of purpose founded for a purpose. And your attendance will ensure that you continue the legacy especially if any of your family members have attended one.
If an HBCU was not at the top of your list of schools to attend, dig a little deeper. With the information you find, we’re sure you’ll be convinced.
